Acrylic vs MDF Wall Art: Which One Should You Choose?
Almost every design we produce is available in either laser-cut acrylic or MDF, and customers regularly ask which is better. Neither is better in every situation. They are different materials that suit different walls, rooms and budgets. Here is an honest comparison.
Laser-cut acrylic
Acrylic is a rigid plastic sheet cut with a laser to produce very clean, precise edges. It is the material behind our mirror-finish, gold and clear pieces.
Strengths: a glossy, reflective surface that catches light; extremely crisp detail on fine Arabic calligraphy; lightweight; not affected by humidity; colour stays stable over years.
Trade-offs: the glossy surface shows fingerprints and dust more readily, and it needs a soft dry cloth rather than an abrasive one.
Best for: living rooms, hallways, offices and any wall where you want the piece to reflect light and feel premium.
MDF (wood-based panel)
MDF is an engineered wood panel with a smooth matte surface. It has more visual weight and a warmer, more solid presence on the wall.
Strengths: a matte non-reflective finish that photographs well and is easy to live with; hides dust better; a natural warmth that suits wooden furniture; excellent for larger statement pieces.
Trade-offs: heavier than acrylic, so larger pieces need a proper fixing; and like all wood-based materials it should be kept away from damp walls and bathrooms.
Best for: bedrooms, studies, prayer corners and rooms with wooden or earthy furniture.

How to decide in one question
Look at the wall where the piece will hang. If the room is bright and you want the artwork to catch and bounce light, choose acrylic. If the room is warm and wood-heavy and you want the piece to sit calmly into it, choose MDF.
Caring for either material
Dust with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid thinners, spirit-based cleaners and abrasive scrubs, which will dull both finishes. Keep both materials off damp walls and out of direct steam.
